Daxter: A Game Full of Regrets
Review By nitroglysius

Flat out, this game is a disappointment. If you’re reading this review in hope of gaining the confidence some of us desire to rationalize the spending of our hard earned cash, then you’re reading the wrong review. Believe me, I wish it were not so. When I first started playing the game, I was looking forward to writing another masterpiece of a review on a likewise game. What is more, it seemed like I would do just that after only playing it for a few hours. However, with time I began noticing that the actively chased goal in the game never changed. You’re probably thinking, "Well, of course. Jack gets captured by the enemy and it’s only expected that, as Daxter, we play the whole of the game trying to rescue him." This is also what I thought; only this isn’t really the case at all. Basically, this game is a bug-hunting disaster.

At the very beginning, your first mission is to rid a hotel of its bug infestation. The second mission is the same, only in a different location - with the same weapon. In the third mission, you get to kill a few more bugs, in - that’s right - a different location. If that’s not enough, you’ll get the chance to return to the same locations, further into the game - with the same weapon, only slightly upgraded. Don’t misunderstand; everything else about the game was decent, if not a little better (the graphics, music, control, and so on). However it lacked perhaps the most important part: the story (the single purpose in playing any game).

Even so, without a story, it’s true that some games still manage to be successful because of their fun factor. Alas, this game lacks enough of that to make it worthwhile. In the end, this game will be fine for little kids, they’ll probably enjoy it, but I sure didn’t. I really regret having wasted my time, and money with this game. I hope you don’t rent or - God forbid - buy this game, only to suffer as I have. Usually, I’d go on from here to inform you about some of the games other pros and cons (such as multiplayer - which, by the by, sucks a great deal more than outer space’s most gluttonous black-hole) but this game is just so terrible, it’s doesn’t deserve further mention.

Graphics: 8.7/10
Sound: 8.6/10
Game play: 6.1/10
Replay: 5.5/10
Multiplayer: 3.2/10 (Why did they even bother with it?)
Difficulty: 6.9/10
Controls: 8.6/10
Overall: 6.8/10 [Forget it exists!]

The Pros: superb graphics, easy controls, colorful scenes, many moves to learn, great gameplay, different missions, variety of vehicles.

The only Con: a few camera problems

Story: You play as Daxter, a half otter half weasel mix. You work around Haven city disguised as a bug exterminator, in order to find clues in hope of breaking Jak (from the infamous Jak and Daxter) out of prison. You have different gadgets (like flamethrower, toxic spray, mini bombs), and you will need all of them to survive. I give it a 8.3/10 since it's a little weird

Amount of Fun: This game is great fun, though it can get pretty frustrating at times, like during boss battles where you have no idea how to beat them  . However, w/ different variety, this game is great. Almost all missions are different, and the game rarely gets boring. I gave it a 9.3/10

Graphics: This might as well be the best part of the game! The graphics are simply superb! They're visually stunning! No matter what you do, where you are in the game, the graphics are always amazing! Not much else to be said. I give them 10/10!

The graphics are 10x better than what it seems like in the screenshot^^^ above

Sound: The music is great and goes w/ the settings and scenes. The voice ins are perfect, though I was a little surprised when I first heard Daxter talk (for those of you who have never played a Jak and Daxter game... Yup, he can talk). There are no multiple voice-ins (like the same ppl for different charectors). Daxter's pretty funny too!I gave it a 9.7/10

Controls: The controls in this game are simple, and don't take very long to get used to. Maybe 15 minutes at the most! You learn new moves as you collect certain eggs and act out Daxter's "Heroic Fantasies". The camera is easy to control (L and R to move the camera), and overall I gave the controls a 9.4/10

Gameplay: Gameplay is pretty similar to the console version of the game, except it's all Daxter  What seperates this from the rest of the PSP games, is it is full of variety! There are very few boring parts, and it's pretty rare that you get stuck (maybe 1 or twice in the whole game). I gave this a 9.6/10, also.

Difficulty: This game is pretty simple, and rarely gets you discourgaed. Only once or twice do you get stuck (meaning you do the same thing more than 10 times). It's a fairly easy game, but is still pretty long. I would give this a 9.1/10

Multiplayer: Ther is only AD Hoc mode for multiplayer, and even that is not needed. The single player is long enough to keep you playing! Anyway, in multiplayer mode, you do weird bug battles. You put your bug up against other people's bugs. It's pretty unusual  I've never done it, so I'm not going to give it a score.

Replay value: This game isn't very long. I've beaten it in 8 hrs and 51 minutes. It's not exactly the longest game. You collect eggs in order to unlock the new dream sequences (heroic fantasies) which when you beat, unlocks new moves. However, you often collect eggs while playing, and like me, don't go back and do a lvl over simply to collect eggs. I unlocked all new moves b4 finishing the game. There isn't very much to do once you've beaten the game, other than go on you "scooter" and drive around, which isn't even half as fun as it sounds  (nothing like GTA) I personally will trade daxter for new games once I beat this. So I gave replay value a 6.4/10

OVERALL: This game is one to buy, or rent for a week or two (if that's possible). Since it's E, this game is fun for anyone, young or old, or anyone between! I gave this game a 9.0 overall! This isn't the actual score, but what I personally think.

Editors Note:

At the end , the people who want to buy this game will buy it, and the ones who dont want to buy it wont :). Whatever choice you make at the end these are only our opinons, and each person has a different liking in their games.

Wow. Totally different experience for me. I get tired of the "Strategic" type "Combo button" missions after awhile. As far as repetative, which game isnt? Had lots of fun playing this game. The graphics are really top notch, and the sound is too. I enjoyed the simplicity of just jumping around and "slapping" the bugs around!!

This is a great game. I feel PSP Crazy may want to avoid writing reviews. They could not be more wrong on this one. This is a great game.

the game looks great but it is repetative and boring but its ok if you not in the mood for an action game or a slow boring game so its still a good time killer. hate the camera tho.

So, it looks like people either liked it a lot, or hardly. Still a little surprising to see so many people liking it though, how old are you guys? Probably not more than 17, I reckon.

More or less gamespot gets paid to review special high rated games, they also sometimes higher scored to please the visitors. They know a site that calls a game they may like , a bad game no one will visit them lol, we are unbiased in that sense

I am 25 and this is the best game ive played recently on PSP. I never liked crash Bandicoot and never was into this genre of games. The simple controlls and excellent graphics will make it interesting enough for you to fiddle around with it a little longer. I would give it 9.5 for sound, The levels are completely detailed and you wont get a feeling that its been repeated. People may have different opinion but In the gaming world nothing can be categorized as a "Kids game". This is a must buy for all the crash Bandicoot and Death Junior fans....play it once and you will know what i am talking about. Overall i give it a 9!

Wow, I really have to disagree with pspcrazy on this one, im not sure we even played the same game here, this game is hands down the best out on the PSP along side Syphon Filter, to the people reading this just look at the overall rating from all sites and you will see that this one is in the minority for real

Sorry PSPCarzy, must clarify what I said. In saying Gamespot, i realy mean "User Reviews" in which the public votes on the game. Most of teh time its pretty acurate and differs a lot to what gamewpot usualy puts up. Me wonders if a rating system for games could be implamented on Game Reviews.

PSPCrazy didnt write the first review, the one most of you seem to disagree with, I did. In the end, perhaps the amount of experience one has determines whether or not theyll like this game. Like I said before, it is an average game with a mediogre plot. Could some of you guys tell me what you found so worthwhile? - and be specific!

lmao , were fine with being the one guy who posts a low score lol. Btw we are implementing user reviews in gaming crazy v3, just keep your eyes out for our article on what it will have.

What a dreadful badly written and unhelpful review that is! A dreadfully poor piece of psuedo journalism with absolutely no content. An interesting story the only reason to play a game? Utter rubbish! Maybe for an RPG, but this is a platformer for crissake - since when has a plot ever been the key element? How this autrhor got an opportunity to write a review when they are obviously so uncapable is beyond me! For what its worth I actually enjoyed the game - but thats irrelevant - I could of easilly read an objective critique that disagreed as long as it addressed any real gameplay elements or had anything to say at all..... The second review at least addressed the issues involved with actually reviewing a game....and reached conclussions I more or less concurr with. Fact is people who are skilled enough to review for a living, actually rate this title, and can back it up with far more interesting writting than that - anyone basing their opinion on that review deserves to miss out on an enjoyable title.

Id have to disagree with you on this nitro. You must obviously not like platform games. I do, and I love this game. Ive only played it a bit so far - cuz im always busy, but it kept me playing for more than an hour, which not many games can do. I would also rate it higher than the PS2 games of Jak & Daxter, of which Ive only played about 5 mins of because it didnt get me hooked. Too be honest, when I first seen your article, I read the first line, and then stopped reading. But now I have read all of it, and the and am dissapointed to see that you didnt want to review the multiplayer as you felt the game was that bad. The PSP needs more non -ported platformers, and this doesnt dissapoint if you love platformers. The only other good platformer is Kao - but thats a port from Kao Kangaroo Round 2. (luckily i never bought it)

OMG!!! Are you guys freaking serious? Fine, Ill admit, perhaps I could have written the review more objectively. Ill be sure to keep my personal opinions limited next time, but with that aside, does the game not lack substance? Aren’t you just wasting your time playing it? I enjoy platform games as much as the next person, but how can you defend this game with such enthusiasm? Bex, did you even try the multiplayer? It is a take off on the Pokemon battles, only EXTRAORDINARILY less complicated! It’s not even worth the effort to extend my finger to press the “Multiplayer” activation button! Titntin, as I mentioned before, you are right in most of what you said, except where you stood in defending this crap of a game. As an adolescent, how mentally simple must you adjust your mind to enjoy this game? Furthermore, it didnt escape me that both of you failed to give specific examples of how this game deserved a better review! You guys simply said it was a platform. Then am I to expect all platform are pretty sh tty, so this one, in comparison, is pretty good? Is that it? Rather than just attacking me, or my writing preferences, why not actually give good reasons for your admiration of this “game?”

What I meant when I said it was a platformer is, that as platformers go, it is quite a good one. Yes Ive played better platformers (Crash Bandicoot on PS2), but Ive also played worse platform games as well, eg Death Jr - even though not as good as Daxter, is still a reasonable good platformer. And no, I havent tried the multiplayer as I dont know anyone else with a PSP, so Ive never tried the multiplayer on any game. I think why, I myself am defending it so much, is probably because of how the review started, it made me not want to read any more, and when I did I ended up disappointed. However desibois review, I found to be more objectively written and a much nicer read.

Are you on Acid? This game is one of the best in its genre and on the PSP overall. What do you expect from a platformer? Daster delivered all around. Levels were well thoughtout, a visual marvel, and sound was well done. Daxter was a fun and entertaining game. This site is run my simpletons, I will visit 1up, IGN, and Gamespot in the future for my reviews.
