The History of Console Piracy and how it affects You, The Gamer.

Software Piracy has been around since the floppies were invented; people were copying games and sharing with their friends and family if they too owned a computer. The first mass console piracy came when the Super Nintendo Entertainment Center got a device that let people put ROMs into a cartridge (at that time only 1 game at a time worked). Then the first modchip was invented for the PS1, this was the first major move in piracy because it caused major concern from Sony and Nintendo over console game security. Sony personally sued many companies over selling and having mod chips in possession. Lik-Sang.com was personally one of those victims as it was one of the biggest modchip retailers at the time. They were shut down for around 2 years before being reopened fully legal. Now companies are wasting time and money inventing hundreds of ways to irritate their customers, they now are adding copy prevention software’s into their games.
Due to this the cost of games has not only risen a large amount, but the release date of the new next-gen consoles such as the Wii and the PS3 have been shifted back almost a whole year. These companies want to make sure that their games don’t get pirated so they are on a mission to build the invisible barrier around their games being copied, unfortunately the demands of piracy is so high, that “invisible protection” is broken down within the first year of that consoles release. That leaves us the customers not only sad and broken hearted, but also angry at the fact that the games cost us now 60 dollars versus the original 40 dollars.
I am sure most of you are noticing that piracy is growing daily by leaps and bounds. A few years back, I was the only one who even knew how to pirate ps1 and ps2 games in my school, now half the people I talk to know how to pirate game consoles, and how to play their pirated version of games. People feel that when you pirate it makes you seem cooler, and somewhat of a “hacker” (I am guessing this came from all those hacker movies from the early 90’s). Man, they are wrong, piracy is what thief’s do in order to save their hard earned money for physical items that they can’t steal so easily.
The largest piracy breakout I have ever seen in my life to date is the PSP iso loader issue. It is not only one of the easiest systems to pirate, but it also requires no modchip. That means it cost the user nothing to fully pirate a game, and it doesn’t prevent even the youngest kid from pirating a PSP game. Although I am totally fine with having a backup of a game you own, or putting ISO’s on your PSP if you own the game in order to speed up the games loading time (As some of the PSP games do have long loading times). I have been noticing the extreme decrease in good games coming out for the PSP. At first I believed that this issue stemmed from the fact that the console has high-graphical demands that are hard to meet, but now I have figured out the true reason that good games are hard to find on the PSP.
Game developers evaluate many different things on a game console before deciding to develop a highly time consuming game for it. They evaluate its system potential, its market share, its popularity, and most of all whether there game will truly sell on its console. If any one of the developers even is slightly up to beat with PSP news they will know right off the bat, that their games will be pirated the second it is released, and the second it is released the game will not sell to its potential. Then they see that the Nintendo DS (Nintendo’s portable system) has a low-rate of piracy compared to the PSP, and many more people own it, they will most likely go to the DS to develop games leaving the PSP in the dust. Now that leaves us, PSP owners with a copy of Dynasty warriors to brood over, or homebrew that bores us after a year.
In recent news headlines there is news of yet a new way to pirate games on the PSP unhindered by firmware issues or game compatibility issues. It is by the method of modchip, the soldered in version of the piracy loader. It will allow you from what we have heard to play ISO’s on any firmware, and all games will work on it. I must point out if you are stupid enough to pay $90 to buy a modchip for a system that costs 200 dollars, then go through the near impossible installation process, then for all I care feel free to brick your PSP, and try again. Modchip’s are like about as safe as the early downgrader when it was released, they are usually so buggy they brick ½ PSP’s it takes a good 6-8 months to perfect the modchip’s firmware. Even though I hate modchip’s, I feel for PSPCrazy’s members, so I will tell you this if you are going to truly get a modchip, for you own sake, WAIT! until a bug-free perfected version is released, it will save you the process of getting a new PSP :)
It is your choice to pirate or not, for the good of the PSP Scene, and the future of video games please put pirating to rest.

I'm assuming that this has to do with the deletion of the ISO and Movie sections of the forums, in which case I can certainly say that you have sealed the fate of this site, I'm not going to sugar coat anything and just say it, without those sections, this site will die. As you probably have noticed, abour 90% of the members here come for the downloads, and without any users, the forums will dwindle, and no with no one to talk to, the remaining members will leave.
As for me, will I stop pirating? Hell no.

i honest have to agree, stop pirating. I used to be a pirate but after like 3 months the games started feeling trashy and the reason is because no companies are developing A grade games for it anymore. now dev dont really care for the system, mostly these days all i see for these days are poorly made games even when I try to buy the umd version.I've quit using my isos since september 05. I use it for purely homebrew now. think about it. what would you rather use on you psp?
Poorly made games like Daxter because of pirating or Homebrew like links2browser, afkim, pspool, or even pspmillionare(my opinion, funner then daxter)

If the software companies dropped their prices to say £20 a game then piarcy wouldnt be so rife. In the UK a new game is £40+ and a year on when the game goes platinum its £19.99 and then shoots to the top of the gaming chart. Therefore if the software companies spent more money on the game less on piarcy protection and then lower the cost of the game and you will sell loads more games.
I tend to check out the iso's and if the game is any good I then buy an original. If the iso is pants its deleted.

i quit piracy when i bricked my psp and when you actually buy the game you will play it a lot more as you have a sence that you've earned the game and you end up playing it a lot more than if you do an iso

See, I can see why companies increase the price of games, because of piracy, but then, catch 22, because the prices increase, more people pirate. As someone else already said, if the games were more like £20 here in the UK, I'd buy a lot more games, where as because theyre £35-£40, I have to limit myself to how many I buy. Some games which I think are OK, but are £35, Im not going to buy as its too expensive, and will download it instead. My favourite game, is Kao Challengers, as it is a great platformer, and surprizingly, it is one of the few games that are £20, and definatly my best, one game that maybe does deserve a higher price tag. If only all games were like that. But yeh, i do actually only use isos to test games really lol, and if its really good, I do buy it for the £35-£40 price.

If games start costing 20 to 40€ then i'll even help stop piracy. I will not pay more then 60€ for any game EVER! unless the CD is covered in gold. By taking the ISO section away you have ruined your site and by the end of this month it will come to an end. I bet sony*****raped you and you're sulking like a *****... nevermind, their are more better sites than this still going. It was good while it lasted. 3 cheers for Pspcrazy!

i dont feel sorry for sony at all, yeh they may not make as much money from selling games, but u forget the company sells plasma screen tvs, batteries, disc drives, dvd players, music systems, e.t.c. they can easily afford piracy, they can also essily afford to drop handheld console games from £40 - £20.
sony also know that the average child who wants a psp probably doesnt come from a wealthy home and will only get to get 1 game per year, when ur a parent and you have to pay rent, buy clothes and feed a whole household its a bit hard to put money aside for a pocket game. i dont feel sorry for sony they are rich as hell. im a loyal sony product buyer, they should have pity on me

the consoles costs about £150
memory card 1 gig
£60
Games X3
£120
Handstrap not included in pack so i had to buy elsewhere
£2.50
on a whole ive spent around £330 on the psp and games an stuff
if it wasnt for homebrew and all my snes roms and music my psp would be collecting dust
im pissed its not vers 1.5 then i would be fully satisfied, i also own both previous sony consoles, a sony dvd player ( a couple ), a sony dvd re writer. all in all i have easily spent about 5 grand on sony products over the past couple years. an some of u suckas are feelin guilty because ur not making as rich as u should be although besides the psp u probably have at least 3 other sony appliances in ur home. use ur brains dummies!

Inocent i thought i told you before, isos can also be used for good reasons, such as speeding up loading times on games like YS, and they can be used as legal backups. Although a majority dont do that i do. And i will take them down about amonth after v3 is establuished. But first i must establish a pillar then take down the other pillar so it doesnt collapse. get what i mean?

In regards to legal backing, I thought it was decided that it wasnt legal after all. Since sony has the UMD copy written, isnt it breaking the law, just to copy the information from them? I dont really know, but I thought that was the case.

This is the first article I have read that actaully makes sense to me and appeals to me. I don't pirate games, as I don't think there are that many good games for the PSP to beging with. I am not impressed with what's been put out there. But, if I did pirate, I would stop immediatley after reading this.

Oh my God Amen, I have got NOTHING to say against this editorial pspcrazy. When I first got my psp I learned about homebrew, but honestly after a while of using it, I felt pretty bad about it, I do NOT want this game to not get used to it's full potential as well, nor do i want to see the system itself become obsolete and follow in the dreamcasts footsteps. Although I don't sympathize with Sony themselves, I do sympathize with those FEW gamers who believe that a great game is worth the cost it is right now, especially for the PSP, I upgraded my system to 2.7, then bought Monster Hunter, and I must say, that if they make more games like this, I am more than happy to buy games. Besides, it aint just Sony making the profit from these games, it's the creators of the games you love so much, personally, I think I owe it to them to pay them so little, for so many hours of entertainment. For the love of God stop the freakin piracy before there is no psp left, and if that means take away the ISO and Movies section of the forum, then I say so bloody be it. This has GOT to stop.

hi.
first of all I have to say that this article is very good.. it really make sense. But my opinion is another than yours:
I rhink that the system if -using homebrew, loading isos and so one- let sony sell 20% more of psp's. I don't think that they didn't know that their psp could't be hacked (in a certain way), but they did this to get more customers who'll buy it.
However, when I'm playing a game and if it really please to me, I'm gonna buy it, when not, I'm gonna delete it.
thx for reading

1st of all, i'd jus like to congratualate pspcrazy on a spectacular article, i dont even pirate games, but only for fear of bricking my psp (or any other console), however, after reading this article i have completely changed my view and am now vehemently against game piracy. 2nd, i understand removing isos but (and this may sound like a stupid question but im not that bright ) why is the movie section being removed, what copyright does it infringe upon?

I used to pirate ISO's/Homebrew/all that junk.....
Untill I had to update for MGA2. I felt awsome after that. mainly due to , at the time, the homebrew community was still a slight bit buggy(PSPOS, PSix, some emulators...). Now I dont mind too much because I now enjoy my Flash games on my psp and the WMV player.(im to lazy to convert WMV to MP3...)
I do applaud this article....and the 20,000 more like it. ^_^
(in all seriousness, GOOD JOB!)

i strongly agree with you pspcrazy. If those game creator don't earn money,we would not get good games to play as tthe creator may feel that WHAT THS USE OF CREATING GOOD GAMES AND ENDED IT IN BEING COPIED AND SOLD IT! They will maybe just that quit the job and find other job that they can earn money.Creating a game require lot and lots of hours and hardship as they would think how to make the games better? So just let them earn what they deserve.SO SUPPORT ORIGINAL SO NO TO PRIVACY.
Note:I am neutral. =D
This is only just only comment ^^

I agree with you RE: the ISO's; however, I feel differently about rom's on the PSP. If the companies who made all the 1337 games back in the day made a UMD with all of roms/games on it, I would buy it. Even if it was $100+US. Why not? For quality entertainment and 100's of games!

Are you serious?? Piracy is a huge deal! Thats how Sega Dreamcast died out.
You my friend are a tool... the hype from the PS2 killed the dreamcast. Piracy will not kill the PSP. Of the people I know who own a PSP I am one of two who know about homebrew. And the other guy has 2.7 so it doesn't matter. Most idiots wouldn't know how to extract an ISO from an archive anyway.
You want proof piracy doesn't kill a system. The PSP is not the most hacked up console. That's blasphemous. Every other X-box is modded, it still seems to be doing pretty well. Almost every X-box I see has a modchip or has been softmodded. Before you make such bold claims look around first, if the PSP dies it's not because of piracy.

PSPCRAZY
stop writing these ridiculous articles and trying to appeal to the base unsophisticated morality of all these little kids.
Two things:
Every system has been pirated since day one. People used to sit at home and copy OS2 Warp onto like 50 disks. Piracy is a moot point because it has always existed and always will exist.
Second, Sony is a billion dollar market share and they know more than anything that a good product sells. If Sony was so concerned about piracy they wouldn't be in the video game business, and that's that. Or the music business. or the movie business.
These people are making their money, fam. Even the guy who made that wack*****game daxter is somewhere wearing velor slippers right now. You see Howard Stringer's suit?
please. meanwhile 30 British pounds is like a weeks worth of food from a grocery store.
Now I'm a loyal supporter of your site, vahid, but you gotta realize that this is the internet, and this is how it is. The people on here agreeing with you mostly have low-to-no technical understanding. I'm also willing to bet that they're mostly between the ages of 12 and 15. correct me if im wrong.
stop the ludicrous articles. and you people out there acting like your getting points for commenting that you dont support piracy: go sit on a leather sofa or something in your AC and chill out.
