The PSP is Crying for Mercy!
By: Vahid Mirjamali

Vahid’s Rants and Raves for the PSP are once again on fire. In this editorial I will talk and debate Sony’s plan for its v3.0 firmware. I am sure most of you will either like this article or hate my guts for writing it, but bear with it for now, and sit back and enjoy the article.

As most of you know Sony has released teasers here and there about what the new version 3 firmware for the PSP will contain. On March 15, about a month before E3 the official PSP Website released a schedule of what will come to the PSP via firmware updates, and so far it has proven correct! Feel free to look at the schedule here: http://www.pspcrazy.com/index.php?page=Story&id=793.
Although it says that the Camera/GPS add-on will come in spring they did show it in E3 so I’ll give them credit.

Now most of you are probably very confused at this point! You’re probably thinking something around these lines "yea old news, so what?". As most of you noticed this is an editorial, meaning that it has some sort of opinion in it. Well here is the rant directed at Sony: Sony if you truly are trying to sell this console as a gaming/entertainment system please keep in mind that this is a Gaming/Entertainment center and nothing else.

Who in the world wants a GPS for the PSP, when the GPS most likely costs as much as the PSP itself! A camera would barely fit into the entertainment genre, but a GPS is way overboard. What really makes the  PSP such a great handheld is that it has the potential to reach the skies of the gaming kingdom, but the lack of original and just fun games are bogging this game systems future. I’m looking at the schedule and although I see promising things like RSS for videos and Network support, who in the world will buy a gaming system to use a telephone? The only demographic for that are professional businessmen who could care less about carrying a gaming console with them 24/7.

If Sony truly wants to exceed and defeat other gaming consoles, especially in the portable field they need to step up the fundamentals of what makes the PSP so great; they need to start working on making some fun and exceedingly original games, and even better then that they need to make support for the other big thing for the PSP, Homebrew.

A minority of people in the gaming community contain a sort of love for homebrew more or less due to its free yet original concepts. Homebrew right now is one of the major things keeping the PSP alive. Although there is a batch of people who just use the PSP for games, and somehow still hold on to their PSP because of the 1 or 2 good games released every quarter, most of the PSP users are still holding on to their Sony portable due to the massive support behind homebrew, due to the continuation of homebrew innovation. A camera and a GPS unit may be a cool add-on, but it won’t help the PSP become the portable game king. Also to add to that, what they did to the PSP during E3 was unforgivable, they literally made it look like some useless tech toy controller for the PS3, that does the same job as a 30 dollar PS3 controller. It was probably the most annoying thing I have ever seen done by Sony for the PSP till now. Sony needs to get their head straight and go back to where the PS1 started out; it started out in the land of innovation.

The small amount of games that were released with explosive graphics, were not only fun but extremely addictive. For instance games like bloody roar and intelligent cube were awesome games that only people that were thinking of the main customer which is us, could think of. These games were not on every single game console out there, but were exclusive to the Ps1 alone. What made the PS1 and PS2 great was that its games were all original and fascinating. The PSP needs more games like that, and less of these other junky distractions.

Although Sony is trying to add a PS1 emulator onto the PSP, they are forgetting that only a few people want to play games like ridge racer for ps1 on the PSP, when the PSP already has games like that in PSP form. It’s like getting the same game and hoping people will go for the fish bait and somehow think that old game is better, while it’s probably much worse. Sony keeps forgetting that the PSP is trying to get away from the whole idea of ports of older games on the portable; the PSP is looking for original games that stand out. A ps1 emulator would be okay as an addition to original games, but it shouldn’t be the main focus as its just another small distraction standing in front of true innovation. Sony has to silence the noise that is around them, and concentrates only on what the customers truly want, FUN. Hopefully we’ll see more that in the very near future.

You are right in your words of wisdom. hopefully sony will wake up and unleash the power that they have created. The psp is not a tech toy for the ps3 its much more than that and sony needs to relize this.ps1 and ps2 are orginal bcuz of the great memorable games it offered. psp has yet to see a orginal memorable game.

Sony only makes a few games, the real problem is developers who treat the PSP like a mini PS2 and don't dare to release anything original. PS: It's Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiidge Racerrrrrrrr!

Coralla, the gps unit will cost about the same as a stand alone one . And the camera if its lower then 2 mp itll suck bad. Which it most likely will be.

Nice article as always pspcrazy! I agree with almost everything. The GPS and Camera are nice add-ons, but Sony needs to focus more on their games. I've noticed that all they have are ports and their games are so boring and short! Even my little brother notices that! They need to put more effort into their games first before these add-ons, which aren't as important.

Being able to play the original Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, and Silent Hill would be worth the upgrade alone...

I agree with the part about people not wanting to use a game system for things like GPS. Who the heck would need GPS when they bought the PSP for games, music, and stuff. But the camera and PS1 emulator are good ideas in my opinion. Kinda like the Virtual cosole for the Wii.

And the E-distribution is not only for PS1 games but for demos too the PS1 games were just one part of it. Its close to homebrew that we wanted. we play emulators so why not want an official one.

Great article. Everything you said in there was acccurate and true. It's hard for Sony to make new games because of isos. When all of their games are available for download and they're not making money why make new games.

very good article! i do agree with all your arguments, the psp should really be just a Gaming/Entertainment center and not a telephone, tv, gps, camera etc. i just got 3 games by now, becaus i'm waiting for a typical sony game - unavailing! there are awesome games for the ps2 (like kya dark lineage, dark chronicle, fatal frame) and i wanna have things like that, not just racing games or boring rpgs (i mean the really boring ones, where the player is left and the enemy right... -.-) so sony first get better with your games before adding useless stuff!

Sony can't think of anything better for the PSP because they are to concentrated on workin on the PS3, which dont really matter to me. i hardly play my PSP because of all the nonsense there coming out for it.

Damn straight. I really hope Sony listens to this, because you're exactly right. The PSP is awesome, but Sony's actions are becoming more and more binding, and quite frankly, the DS is beginning to look better and better with each firmware update, and even though I'm not updating, I find it to be a slap in the face. I've shown some of my friends some of the games I've put on, such as Pomber 1.0, Attack of the Mutants, and NesterJ, the NES emulator witha Super Mario Bros 3 ROM, and my friends were extremely impressed. They can't do it with thier PSP's because they would have to know everything about firmwares, and what it means for downloading, and what to download for each version. They'd have to learn about Fanjita and Ditlew's Eloader, and about kernal mode restrictions, and quite frankly, with this much difficulty, it's not even worth bothering with for them. Most of my friends have been updating because they don't have time to mess with Sony's bull. Sony really is killing the PSP, and if they don't do something about it soon, it'll be too late to regain the consumer's trust.

You are right in many things, but i think the situation is not so horrible. I just dont understand why the Sony dont see, that the homebrew applications is a very important part in the case of PSP. (I hope you understand what im trying to say, sorry for my bad english)

well if you look at the japanese market the umd map disk did sell a lot of copies and they are thinking that the gps will help people who use the psp for maps and stuff. I have done that before. I went to mapquest and instead of memorizing or drawing out a horrible picture I just saved the image and put in on my psp. The help with a gps would totaly take out the mapquest part and also cut down the time it took to get to the place I was going by showing a route that I could take.

look at what the psp is, it is a game handheld yes ofcause, but it came with a video player, a music player and connection to the internet. in japan or if you can read japanese you are able to download direct to psp series and movies. psp is not just a gaming console and i dont think it was ment to be only a gaming console. they did say the psp is not a child of the ps1 or 2 but more like a neice or nephew. with such things like talkman and some games only in japan at the moment that wish to give us the ability to look the the future and try to make things that are original. i understand as a gamer we dont get that many original GAME titles but im pritty damn happy, i love the games i have. im just saying that the psp is trying to be original and offer somthing for everyone, its just not doing the stuff focused gamers want.

Another well argued piece vahid...agree that rather than trying to compete with the pda's and cellphones and other umpcs (how pants is the flash!), sony need to embrace the psp strengths...specific gaming for psp (not ports or PS1 dls) and the net streaming capabilities of the device (which leyt's face it has been possible since 2.5) and not asking us to fork out even more for their locationNOTSOfree...

I think that the idea of making a camera addapter would be pretty cool, but for a fact I know is that GPS will probably cost pretty cheap because of a new handheld system that came out, the Gizmondo, This system is cheaper than psp and has its own playable umd games, a built in camera, GPS, built in memory stick, and much more and this device was selling in stores for about $170. And im pretty sure that is where sony got there idea of a GPS and Camera addapter.

With regards to the GPS I agree there is no real practical use to it, I mean unless your near a networked area it's kinda usless you can't stay connected to the net while your driving. As far as the camera I'm not to sure if it's practical I mean I liked the Gameboy camera but what kind of quality pictures can you get out of something smaller than the GB camera? With the PSP many things are capable but lets be real here for a moment. An PS1 emulator? I mean there are not to many PS1 games that don't use the R2 and L2 triggers not to mention anolog features can't be used with only one joystick. I just don't see what Sony's thinking. I mean the main things to focus on is the web browser because it needs to be improved to work on current sites with current technology (AKA Flash 8) As far as you can go with the current browser you can log into Myspace but you cannot go any further than that. Also things like making the PSP be able to play other media formats like MPG. I mean these are the most standard formats. MP4 is only a fairly new format and not many media outlet use it only iPod and PSP, and few cameras. And maybe they should make some more PSP only games (Death JR) and stop remaking games (Ape Escape) I mean you can only copy so much before people get bored, and they should be more practical like for instance remaking Tales of Phantasia, because with firmeware updates you can't use a SNES emulator to play the original game. Personally I think for the sake of gaming Sony should hire some PSP hackers, People loved the 1.50 firmware because of the homebrew, if Sony released firmwares that could read homebrew perfectly without blocking the tech it'd be great. Like make a PSP with the browsers and stuff but also have it palying SNES and Genisis, what I'm suggesting is that Sony should hire Homebrew Developers to make it so that Homebrew programs will work on all PSP Firmwares and that they'd have no errors to work with the firmware. Kinda like having the mod chip without the chip.

I'll have to disagree on with you on this one Vahid. As far as hardware and software go, they are two different divisions so developing a GPS isn't affecting game development at all. A alot of people also say that homebrew saved the PSP, yet, if only 5% of people use homebrew, that doesn't work. The stats are flawed. Finally, nothing goes into development with out througher market research, so to say Sony are wasting time in areas (such as PS1 emu) is not entirely correct. These guys pay a shed load of money to indiependent research people to find out what customers want. There is a problem on the forums with a lot of informtion being repeated which is unfounded and incorrect. I think I will write an article and talk about how Sony works and a lot of the decisions taken such as no homebrew on the PSP but likely on PS3.

I have to agree with you with this to some extent, the main gaming and whole use of this system has not been doing well. The Homebrew is the only thing that is keeping the system alive and is still why i even use mine. Fight Night Round 3 really got me pumped I own it, but since i cant play it on my 1.50 yet i use the iso and i love it!

What a stupid article! The reason why PSP is so cool is because of its multy features such as an mp3 player, video player, playing games, and internet. The more features the better.

100% on target. Although tech innovation and lack of focus are seldomly hand in hand, this seems to be the case here. The PSP was born FIRST AND FOREMOST as a gaming platform, with incredible multimedia capabilities included. Customers BUY the PSP to play games... not to replace their laptops, ipods, or portable dvd players. Diversification is fine, the plainly obscene dismissal of purpose & originality echoes the downfall of giants of gaming past (ask Nintendo & SEGA about the success of the plethora of gimmicky gadgets released for the now extint consoles). Sony: the PS1 spearheaded the gaming revolution by breaking boundaries in GAMING... or in a language you will understand; BY PLEASING THE GAMERS, YOU SECURE YOUR CUSTOMER'S INTERESTS AND THUS INCREASE YOURREVENUES. SUCCEDE OR FAIL... IT'S ALL UP TO YOU.
