flOw review

Released: March 6, 2008

There’s nothing really quite like this game, for sure, and for the cheap price it’s not a bad buy. It’s real negative is the extremely short game time. I feel kind of bad for writing such a limited review, but that’s all I can say about this game. And the images in this review are in order to what I say in the "Gameplay" section, except the Credit Snake, it couldn’t be found except in the image above (the last one on the right).

Presentation: 4

There isn’t really that much that happens in the game, start screen that describes the controls, start game, play game, finish game in a few hours. Yeah, the only reason I gave something like that a 4 is because from the intro screen, it describes the whole game. Mellow and simple, that’s all.

Graphics: 5

Even though you can move in three dimensions (kind of), you mostly play in 2D and see 2D textures and graphics. Like echochrome, the game has sharp but simple graphics and textures, but the difference is that in flOw, there are a lot more colors; it’s what you can call “trippy.” The creatures, or fish, that you control are dynamic and so are the creatures you eat. When you get hurt, you turn blue, when you’re white, you’re neutral, when you’re red you are “angry,” and when you’re green, you’re stunned, the same goes for the creatures you kill. But it’s not as simple as that, the creature you control glows different colors as it evolves, etc. It’s really fun to watch. And depending on the creature you control, the game space changes color.

Sound: 4

There isn’t much to hear, it’s very limited. But you do hear something constantly, ambient sounds. Otherwise, you hear “eat,” “be eaten,” “angry,” “stunned.” That’s BASICALLY it.

Gameplay: 7

It’s pretty good, with simple controls too. Left analog stick to move, start to pause, wlan switch to turn on multiplayer (yes, multiplayer, don’t worry, not that good), and any other button to use the creature’s special ability. You basically eat small creatures to refill health (which is your body), you eat larger creatures to get evolution creatures (which makes you larger, whimsical, dynamic, and increases your health), you eat these flower looking things to get you angry (you can eat faster), advancement fish to… advance the game, and a final ball, which restarts the game and lets you choose a new unlocked creature to play as. There are 6 creatures to play as: (Described by what they resemble)

1) A snake, with a special ability to move faster.

2) A jelly fish, with a special ability to create a vortex to suck creatures into its mouth.

3) A manta ray, with a special ability to kill Steve Erwin. Ok, ok, sorry, I mean to use an extremely large speed boost, by using up a tail section (which you regain with smaller creatures).

4) An electric eel, with no electricity, but instead, its special ability is to become cloaked and fool other creatures into eating one of its… thingies, and they become stunned.

5) A “predator snake,” with the special ability to dominate any creature with health circles (which you eat to defeat creatures).

6) A credit snake, with the special ability to move faster and to enjoy the credits… Awesome?

And that’s basically it; I’ve described the game to you. Oh, multiplayer… Not that fun, useless, and laggy.

Lasting Appeal: 3

Yep, 3, why? Because it’ll take you about 2-3 hours to complete the entire game with each of the 6 creatures. The game breaks down into about 16 “stages” for each of the creatures, to advance and retreat to a stage, you eat advancement creatures. And that’s it; you eat, evolve and dominate each of the 6 creatures for 16 stages each for about 2-3 hours, and no bonus materials.

Hardly a lengthy game to be enjoyed.

Final Word: 23/50 Poor!

With the math all done and over with, the game is overall pretty bad, with it’s really short gametime, it’s limited but appropriate sound, and not amazing presentation really gave it what it got.

If you find it for a really cheap price for like 5 or 10 bucks, go ahead, pick it up, and try it out. Try to enjoy it while you’re at it, too, and then be disappointed at how quickly it finishes…

That’s right, like your first time.
