That is true. But at this point, I think that we're looking at artificial bacterium and very simple scale. But the benefits are phenomenal. All of the promised "nano-technology" is much for feasible if "natural."
We can create an artificial strain of bacteria that live of off oil. Then we could clean up oil spills. Or we could make bacterium that target cancerous cells. And if the body immunizes against it, a new strain can be developed.

well it has to start somewhere e.g from seed to tree. yeh now we cansay oh its just a few cells what harm can it do? im sure it will develop into somthing big e.g dolly the sheep was the big r/w devopment in cloning. its the same with robots now they are making human like androids that began as cute football playing robots. its the same with this.

We can create artificial life but not land on mars? What the hell question is that? It's outer space, it's something entirely different to artificial life. It's like saying, I can make pizza, but I can't do a backflip.

I'm gonna have to agree with Saki on that one, we've been studying bacteria and medicines for hundreds of years, we've only been with space travel for what? 50 years, maybe?

I just see SO much potential in this. It's always been sci-fi to be able to create aliens and stuff, but we pretty much are when you think about it. They are not from Earth, making them aliens! (however simple they may be)

I'm against it, pure and simple.

People are meant to die, that's part of life is dying, now before anyone says anything, yeah, if the circumstances came to one of my family members needing it, then I'd be for it.

But right now, I'm not. Cancer is a cause of death, disease is a cause of death. If we get rid of those, there will be to many people on this planet, There's already over-population, imagine if there was a cure for cancer, HIV, sypholis(sp), and other viruses and diseases, the death rate would be cut drastically.

That too is a valid point. But I doubt that if they found a cure for cancer, they would not release it.
But still, think of the environmental possibilities! We could create organisms that create Ozone, or clean up oil, even fertilize soil!
It would benefit all of mankind.

and when they become sentient beings they might deem us useless, thats only one negative i can think of

i do not think we as a human race are ready to handle such a responsibility. call me a paranoid conspirator but i would consider this a nail in the coffin of the our civilization, maybe even our species. i would have thought this was awesome two days ago but i recently watched a documentary that opened my eyes to the folly of our views on life and science

I say you should keep nature natural, not fuse it with technologically made organisms. I don't like to think that people are capable of playing God with the enviroment and heath, it just doesn't sit right with me.
