O.K: so I am thinking about buying a Nintendo DS Lite, either new or used at Gamestop. I am also interested in hacking the DS Lite for homebrew and other hacks, but I dont wanna screw myself over and I decided it smart to ask these questions on a forum

:

1) I have researched and discovered the DS Custom Firmware allowing you to use emulators on DS...what is required to have this done, and is the process easy or the same difficulty as installing PSP Dark Alex CFW?

2) What will this DS Custom Firmware allow me to do...ex) ISOs?

3) Will all of this hacking work on any Nintendo DS Lite?

4) If no to question 3, what should i look for when purchasing my DS Lite?

5) I am aware that installing DS Custom Firmwmare requires some sort of GBA Cartridge or DS Cartridge allowing me to place the Custom Firmware instillation files on it. I have watched multiple youtube videos of people installing CFW on their DS, but they were using a GBA cartridge, and when they were using this cartridge, they had to knife out a part of their ds...will the DS cartridge work also?

Well thats about it...sorry for the super long post and super long questions...but i want to be sure I know what I am buying.

I am planning on buying the DS by the end of the week so quick reply would be apprciated

what about the cycloDS evolution. that seems pretty easy.

also what about the custom firmware...do i need that? how does it work? on 1-10 scale how easy is it?

sorry im such a noob with ds.

I am also new to this, but from my understanding, purchase a slot-1 cartridge (R4DS or Cyclo Evolution, both do the same thing), buy a micro-sd card (at least 1GB, $10 at newegg.com), then with the purchase of the slot -1 cartridge it also comes with a usb memory stick for use with the Micro SD card. Drag the files onto the memory card, then plug it into the cartridge and run it as you would a normal game. No custom firmware needed.

I believe the only time you would want to flash your ds is if you intend to use a slot-2 cartridge without a pass-key.

Someone correct me if this is incorrect.

is slot 2 gba games? do i need a slot 2 thing to run gba games or can the R4 handle it? the R4 seems like a better deal online then the cyclo evolution.

Currently a slot 2 cartridge is the only method for playing gba games.

Here are two in depth reviews of both the Evolution and R4DS,

R4DS Review:

Aside from the Evolution being a new product, I don't really see much of a difference.

One note I would like to point out, since the time of the R4 review, download play has been fixed, along with a few other things (through updated firmware).

Also, Gameyeeeah.com has the R4DS for $35 +$5 shipping. I just ordered one yesterday, I bought a DS this past weekend. The only bad part is delivery time is 12-18 days, unless you want to pay $20 for UPS.

in your sig i see that you have the cyclods and now your getting the r4...were you having problems with cyclo?

The CycloDS Micro is a slot 2 cart. Unfortunetly I still can't use it yet. As mentioned earlier, I got the DS this past weekend, I purchased the CycloDS on Monday, and ordered R4DS yesterday, the Cyclo just got delivered yesterday, I won't see the R4 for another 2 weeks, unfortunetly you can't use a slot 2 cart unless you have either a passkey, or if you flash your DS. I do not have a flash key (the R4DS will act as one), and I do not want to flash my DS. So it is pretty much useless until I get my R4DS. Sorry that I couldn't have been of more help on that subject.

So from my understanding, you need both a slot 1 and slot 2 cart to get the full capabilities out of the hack?

thats what it seems like.

i just bought my ds tonight...i figured that i might as well buy the ds and some games..i got new super mario bros and mario kart...both got 9/10's on gamespot.com
