Icon5 Need Help!

Hi, im a noob to PSP homebrew, downgrading, unbricking or what ever you want to call it.

Im sure there are tons of threads already explaining what i need but they seem so complicated, and it seems to be that there is a ton of ways to do it.

Basically, I have a normal PSP, not a slim/light one, with version firmware 4.00

I have a normal battery, and a normal Sony 1GB memory stick.

What do i have to do to be able to play retro games on my PSP like SNES, Game Boy, etc?

What firmware should i downgrade to, and how do i do it?

Ive seen tutorials on how to make a pandora's battery etc and i think thats what i need.

I have been told that a Pandora's battery "unbricks" you're PSP, what does this mean?

Do i also need a custom firmware, and do i need that before i downgrade?

Also, which custom firmware do i need, and will i be able to play newer PSP games on my PSP that require more recent firmware to run?

When i have downgraded or whatever is needed to do to get to play retro games, where do i download the games from and how do i install them onto my PSP?

I have scoured the forums and read tons of guides to do these things but i am still really confused

PLEASE can someone help me out?

Thanks a bunch guys.

-Ryan

Re: Need Help!

First of all when u downgrade u are going into custom firmware and you will need to obtain CFW before anything. If u are unsure of how to make either a magic memory stick or a pandora battery i recommend purchasing one. (just google it) They usually come with instructions and will give you a link of a video. You will need to have custom firmware such as 4.01m33-2 to play "retro" games. If you are still confused keep on asking questions like i do!

Re: Need Help!

To be able to play retro game on your psp, you will need to install a custom firmware. As your psp is on v4.00, you have no choice but to use a pandora’s battery to install the custom firmware.

Custom firmware is a firmware very similar to the original sony’s official firmware but will allow you to a lot more with the psp. Like use homebrew apps/games, play backed-up games from your memory card, install themes, use plug-in’s and more.

Pandora’s battery: the pandora’s battery was originally developed to un-brick psp’s. basically, if you mess up upgrading the firmware, downgrading to install a custom firmware or messed around trying to install a theme and you bricked the psp (the psp power light will come on for 20sec’s the go off and there was nothing on the screen. The psp will be useless. Just like a brick), then you could use the pandora’s battery to recover the psp back to normal. But the developers realised, that you could also install a custom firmware "safely" using a pandora’s battery.

If you were to use the latest pandora’s battery software (DC5), then you would be able to install v3.90m33. if you wanted to install the latest custom firmware, then you would have to manualy install it. I’ts not hard to do. It does sound harder than it is. But as your on a fat psp, you will also have to install the v1.50 kernal patch (to be able to play homebrew apps and games and you would also need to install the the latest popsloader to be able to play the retro games.

As for where to download the games from, sorry but it’s against forum rules to give you a direct link to them. You will have to find them yourself. Use google and you will find them in no time. If you going to play back-up psp games from your mem card, then the game files (they will be in either the ISO or CSO format), they will go into the "ISO" folder on the root directory of your mem card. When you have installed a custom firmware onto your psp, it’s always good practice to format your mem card in the psp. The psp will make all the new necessary folder for you. And "ISO" being one of them.

Im sorry if all the above has confused you even more, but if it has, then don’t hesitate to ask again. We were all like you at some point in time. and by asking and trying things out for ourselves, is how we become so knowledgeable.
