Why do people by UMD movies?

I bought a couple, just cause i was too lazy to rip them. I downloaded hostage, and i must say it is near umd quality and only 380 mb.

as long as they are close to the $10 range i don't mind purchasing them. the quality and ease of use is the selling point for me. even more so now that i need the memory sticks free space for other things besides movies.

The quality will ALWAYS be higher. Sony set up the video playback so it will not play back the at the true resolution the PSP can display. So the UMD version will always look better. Also if Sony didn't do such a thing, quality could be same but then it would take too much of a 1gb stick.

Personally, I'm fine converting movies to around 450mb and watching them on my PSP.

I don't watch that many movies on the psp. When I do it's kind of a spur of the moment thing so umd's work well cause you can take them with you and I can only fit one movie on my memory card.

Yeah if it's $10-$15 I usually Rent and Rip the DVD and Buy the UMD.

I personally will not buy any UMD movies because I don't see this media becoming a staple anywhere other than on the PSP. Sony will probably bring out a home UMD player for your TV sooner or later, but then they would be going up against DVDs and maybe even hamper their blu-ray media. But I will admit they are excellent quality on the little PSP screen.

If I had money, I would definetly buy some of these movies on UMD, like Labyrinth or Kill Bill 1.

it wont be cheap after buying 5 movies, you could rather buy a mem card and put other stuff in aswell

yes i know but the whole discussion here, first it said people might not be able to afford 100$ straight out, and umds dont cost 20$ cept for the realy elite ones, try about 12-18$ at sams club. so that makes about 8 umds which are far more elite quality.

secondly, for those who are buyin a ps3 there is more and more speculation that u will be able to play umds on the tv set which would kick ass. i personally also like to get movies on my memory stick but umds are totally fine with me.
