See, this is where most people get it wrong. When I'm stealing from a store, not only am I taking something that they paid for (they have to pay for the games to get them in their stores), but I'm taking their ownership away. That's the essential part of stealing. It implies loss of ownership. I'm taking away the profit they would've gotten had I bought the game, and preventing them from gaining any further profit from potential future buyers.

Piracy != Stealing. It doesn't imply loss of ownership. If I download GOW: Chains of Olympus, Sony is not losing the game. It's definitely not a win-win situation, but it's not a parasite situation. I'm not causing Sony harm. It's commensalism, or perhaps even mutualism in a sense. I'm gaining a game that I'll probably not play for more than a few hours, and Sony is gaining my undying support and advertising of the PSP console.

Lastly, the idea that downloading ISOs is causing developers to shy away from the PSP or is making them poor is hilarious. Not only are they making a lot of money, but they're making games at a faster and more quality considerate pace then ever before. Arguable three of the top 10 best games for the PSP have been released in the last 6 months (God of War, Crisis Core, MLB 08: The Show). When you're getting the best games this late in a console's lifecycle, it shows pretty conclusively that developers are not shying away.

I'd also like to note that it's offensive to imply that Custom Firmware = Piracy because it simply doesn't.

Whether or not piracy is "right" or "morally" apprehensible, is up to the user to decide. I decided long ago that it's not a morally corrupt action, and I don't foresee anything that could sway my decision.

Re: Impressions on PSP Piracy

Gallant i'll agree with you in that piracy shouldn't automatically assumed on custom firmware but trying to justify piracy is stupid. I mean i pirate and i know i do and don't really care, but the difference is i don't try to justify it. I know its not right, and even though the game might or could be mediocre, that doesn't mean you have justification for it. Anyway, I will say that Sony is amazing in how it seems to think that piracy is the sole problem with game sales when its most indefinitely a lack of advertisements on television that is crippling these games. Sometimes companies like atlus and such are guilty of it too but for the most part, if you advertise your games, they certainly do well.

Re: Impressions on PSP Piracy

gallant hit the nail on the head for me. AND, I might add, I put a LOT of money into sony for the ps3 and its games. even if ps3 is modded I wont mod right away. Im supporting sony, just not as much on the psp side..

I mod to get a few things. 1. to get features that are capable but werent included for some reason (music while gameplay, xmb/ir shell in game, cheat device), all these custom apps and stuff, all this homebrew capabilities, its astounding!! look at emulators, they blow my mind!! Ive missed mario tennis for nearly 7 years Id say but its back thanks to psp! Ive tried to buy it but its so old and such a good game (n64 version), sure its not the same but it brings back memories man. 2. I spend more than I make, thats bad for someone like me who has bills to pay, cell phone, pay for gas, etc. I do support sony, I buy ps3 games, controllers, accessories, soon a huge sony 50", but I just cant justify paying 40 bucks for a psp game Im gonna play for 4 hours, beat, get bored of. some are amazing that I can go back to, but Ive played so many that those are really rare since I have intensely high standards.

but srsly, gallant, your first post and Im already in love with ya man though. you have alot of good thoughts, post more and stay ^^

"I know it's not right" is not a very compelling argument as to why piracy is morally wrong (I don't think it is).

Lack of game sales for Sony was mostly due to bad games for awhile (lack of advertisements contributed to this as well), but lately the game sales have skyrocketed. This is due to the fact that a lot of great games have come out recently: MHFG2, Crisis Core, God of War, MLB 08: The Show, Patapon, FFT: War of the Lions, fl0w, PE Soccer 2008; among others.

tds: Thanks, I'll be sure to stick around a bit.

Re: Impressions on PSP Piracy

games arent created because of how many games have been sold alone, its by how many people have the system and how current it is. the psp wasnt as popular back then but then it gained alot of credibility. sales for games are very high, as well as for the psp itself, and thats what entices a company to make games

Re: Impressions on PSP Piracy

Well the way i look at it is not what is morally right or morally wrong i just think that when i pirate a psp game its wrong plain and simple, but im ok with that because in the larger scale of things that $30 or however much it is wont make a difference to a company that makes millions daily.

Re: Impressions on PSP Piracy

I always buy anything worth buying, but I do download ISO's for a quick test run before I buy stuff. The only exception so far is Taiko No Tatsujin No Portable 1 & 2, because it's bloody expensive to import and no one is going to translate it. If I see it on Ebay or on sale I'll buy both. The only game I regret buying is Mai Hime, because it's dire and I bought it on impulse.

One of the annoying things about the PSP is that we don't get as many cool Special Edition releases as the Japanese - Haruhi, Fate: Stay Night Colussium and pretty much all the visual novels come with great SE releases, and what do we get? "Bundles" with special edition PSP's. Once you have one, you aren't going to buy another... Some incentive for people to buy the games is vital given how easy it is to pirate on the system.

I actually saw a PSP advert at 5 to midnight on Dave last night - I nearly choked! First PSP advert I've seen in the UK ever!
