| Death Mod ![]() ![]() ![]() | Guitar Hero 3 Guitar Hero is back, and with a great new setlist of tracks, thankfully, most of them being master tracks, and unlike the last 2 in the series, not horrible cover versions, real rock stars suck as Guns n Roses “Slash” and Rage Against the Machines “Tom Morello” being playable characters, I think that activisions might have a real winner on their hands….but do they really? Story Guitar Hero only has one story line for all the modes and that is to get from a basic band, formed up by a few friends into a real rock band, finally playing with the big boys and then playing off against the devil in hell. There isn’t really much to say about the story really, other than I am surprised they even bothered to add one, after all, this is a music game after all and you just expect them to be playing for the hell of it, so that’s a great start, co-op career is the same kind of thing, but set in a different order to make things different with a friend ![]() Gameplay If you have played the last 2 guitar hero games, you will know what you are doing from the first time you pick up your guitar, since I played guitar hero 2 to death, I was confident enough to straight in the game on hard, and really wasn’t disappointed, but for those why are new to the series, here is a brief overview of the game for you. When you buy the game, it comes with its own guitar controller, with 5 “fret” buttons on the neck, all you have to do to play is to press the buttons on the neck and press the strum bar on the base of the guitar to play notes and chords, as the game gets more complex, you will he required to press them very quickly, but that’s for you to learn, it isn’t hard and you soon find yourself rocking to the songs, but as the difficulty rises, as you get better, then you have to start pushing yourself. Overall here though, the game is just as good, if not better than its counterparts, they are a lot more generous with the hammer-ons and pull-off’s, and rightly so because when you get too hard, you will be using them a lot! Also the nee inclusion of being able to battle the likes of “Slash” and “Tom Morello” is a nice idea, but is kinda boring once you have beaten them a few times, so stick to playing against your real friends ![]() Graphics Now, being a music game, you would think there would be much to meet the eye in the backgrounds, but activision have done a great job animating the characters and making the stages look great, you really feel like you are rocking out with the audience screaming at you. Each stage looks unique, ranging from London to Japan, making it look at authentic as possible, and they seem to have done a good job, but even though it does look good, you wont be looking at it much as you will be busy looking at the notes while playing the game. Sound Ah…sound, the most critical part of a music game, and im glad to say they have done a great job choosing the songs. The game starts off with some light rock from the likes of poison and Alice cooper from the 70’s and 80’s, moving down to the metal type songs from Tenacious D and Metallica to Slayer and Iron Maiden. There is a range of songs from all time periods, and songs that if you were around back then, you will remember, and now be able to play along to. And to top it off, there mostly master tracks, no more damn covers like in 1 and 2, so that will keep all rock enthusiasts happy ![]() Difficulty Now, a lot of people have questioned the difficulty of this game, being even to hard for beginners. The game starts nice and simple, only using 3 of the fret buttons when playing on easy, 4 when on medium and all 5 for hard and expert, but even with just 3 buttons the game is hard for beginners, and moving on to more frets is hard and takes a lot of time and practice. People like myself though will be in for a huge shock when running into the game and playing straight on hard, I was crippled by the difficulty of the game even on hard, and if you want to run in on expert, then be prepared, its no way near as easy as 1 or 2, and then if you should beat the game on expert….you have Through the Fire and Flames by Dragonforce…just youtube this and you will see what im talking about…., so trust me, you will be in the training area a lot during this game ![]() Mutliplayer Another great addition to the game is the online multiplayer, being able to rock off against or with another person is awesome, even if you are beaten quickly by them. Co-op Career allows you to rock with a friend, with one person on lead and the other on bass, raking up the highest score will be essential, and is great fun, overall, loads of multiplayer to be had, and with the added “Battle” mode, with powerups to make the game harder for your opponent, things could get ugly. Replay Value The main replay value of this game will be to beat your score on the songs, and 5* all of the songs on each difficulty, and this will take you months, years even for the harder songs, so all you will have to do is practice and finally 5* that 1 song that has been bugging you. Also, playing online is great fun, and will keep you coming back to beat whoever you can find online. ![]() Overall Aside from the difficulty, this game is awesome, the multiplayer has improved a lot from the previous games, more specifically with the inclusion of online multiplayer, and replay value will keep you coming back to 5* all of the songs. Difficulty will hold you back though, so you will need to be prepared for a fight, and trust me…a fight you are going to get! Story: 7.6/10 Gameplay: 9.0/10 Graphics: 8.6/10 Sound: 9.5/10 Difficulty: 9.3/10 Multiplayer: 8.9/10 Replay Value: 8.3/10 Overall:9.3/10
