According to an invention-spotting column at NewScientisttech (by way of Eurogamer) Sony has applied for a patent that will make portable tech a bit more portable -- and squishy.
According to the patent the plan is to create handheld computers, phones, and games that can fold up for carrying, but become rigid for use.
Say wha? The body and screen of these do-dads would be made from a springy polymer material that has conductive rubber bracing struts filled with a gel of aluminosilicate particles suspended in silicone oil. Passing an electrical current through the struts would cause those particles to clump together, harden the gel, and stiffen up the toy.
According to the patent the transition from soft to hard takes just milliseconds (heh-heh… oh… grow up!). Of interesting note to gamers, the patent specifically indicates that this same technology could be used in a game controller to make it jolt -- or change shape -- in response to on-screen action. An example offered that during a fighting game if a player is defeated, the electroheological fluid device would become soft in order to "improve the realistic sensations in the game."
holy crap this sounds good all i gotta say is is stick this on the ps3 controller and make it vibrate and we are all happy again any this Dappa reporting out

Good find mate, using it for games is all good and well but lets hope they make a foldup android love doll with this technology. Fits in your pocket but you can pull it out anywhere and it'l be ready for some action!

this would mean that PCB boards would have to be re-invented. Maybe, a thin layer of non-heat-sensitive gel covered with the schematics, sprayed with a super thin polymer to keep them all from touching, and another layer of gel to secoure everything. Just hoper you dont have a short, or your handheld could jello in the middle of a game
Actually, folding wouldnt be a practical use for this, but ROLLING would. Imagine we take all of the processors from behind the screen and swap places with all the PCB from behind the control parts. turn the screen/PCB into a gelly thingy, and have it pull out like a wind up blind(for windows) or roll back into the handle parts. Then, when you want to game, stretch it out, and press a button.BAM! PSP, that folds to the size of a bit larger than a cell phone. AND NO SCRATCHES ON THE JELLY SCREENN!!!!!!

Hmmm.. thought only nasa, scientist, and billions of goverment dollars could come up with this technologie. I guess gameing isn't a mind sucking fade, but rather a jump into the future for all mankind. O and never thought sony would be the first with something.
