The PS1 emulator has been the cause of a lot of confusion, rumors, and anger over the facts coming out regarding its release and pricing. I hope that this will help a few people get a peace of mind, regarding the PS1 emulator the PSP.
First let’s start with what we know for sure:
PS1 library will be available to download from their YourPSP.com and Playstation.com websites. The games will run on an emulator created by Sony themselves, with a game collection they hope will reach 7000 by the end of 2007.
Then we can move onto the rumors that have been over a few magazines, and on some major sites:
So far the price is pretty unknown, but from what we have researched, it is known that the price is $15 per game. But I urge you not to use this as an actual fact because there is a high chance we will be proven wrong (I hope)!
Also on a PSP Mag in the U.K, there was a small list of launch titles that the Mag said will be available for release: · Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare · Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars · Broken Sword: The Smoking Mirror · Doom · Doom 2: Hell on Earth · Duke Nukem: Time to Kill · Duke Nukem: Land of the Babes · Final Fantasy VII · Gran Turismo 2 · Grand Theft Auto 2 · Metal Gear Solid · Twisted Metal 2 · Quake 2 Although there is a lot of rumors flying around about this, try to take this with a closed mind, as most of the information is fake, and is from people who want attention. In reality all we can do is wait and see what Sony will say to us.
LONG LIVE THE PSP! (and PSPcrazy.com)

Wow this seems pretty cool, but $15 bucks seems a little pricey when I can get them for $5 and play it on my PS2.lol

I would only expect long games that had more than one cd on the ps1 to be $15, but everything else should be $5-$10. I really don't want to buy the same game twice, if it's gonna cost the same.

I still wanna know what they will do about the L2/R2 buttons which the PS1 controler has but the PSP does not have.

I REALLY hope this happens soon. I can't wait to play MGS and GT2 again. (Of course GT4 mobile would be better, but thats like died now in terms of news...).

(Warning, nothing in here is backed by any company information, please DO NOT take any of this as gospel)
In response to some of your concerns, I doubt it would be a very frightful issue.
Firstly, it depends if sony's going to offer the games at a good price, look at what gamestop had to do to sell alot of the old PS games. I'd imagine that the rate would not be flat in the first place, considering the popularity and demand for certain games such as 'Symphony of the Night' or 'Armored Core.' To quell concerns of the L2 and R2 button, I would imagine sony would do the pragmatic thing and release a peripheral. Notice how on the top you have two screw-holes on your PSP? Beside the USB port? I'd imagine that could be used, with some creative plastic-work, to make an L2, and an R2 button pad.
Sony does have an advantage when it comes to making the emulator, when you think about it: They're developing for hardware they made in house, for a system they developed for in the past. I would assume that would almost garuntee good gameplay but I think we're all smarter then that.
The ball's really in Sony's court with this device. Hopefully this won't flunk like the UMD format.
