In Japan the Nintendo DS has seemingly taken over the the Video Game market. Not only is it the best handheld system, but it also sells way over any console as well including its counterpart, the Wii. Regardless of that the PSP has stepped up efforts to reclaim that the portable portion of the market. Due to the PSP’s increasingly fresh new titles the PSP is now the second top selling game system in Japan, in fact it has sold more then the Wii over the last month. Sony has released a press statement showing that they have sold 5 million PSP’s by the end of January 2007. While that may seem great they are just starting up their game release ferver to defeat the DS’s 9.6 million units sold massive lead. This month has been the best selling month in PSP history due to the release of Monster Hunter 2nd, a great RPG that has just been released in Japan this month.
After 2 years, the PSP is finally starting to pick up the pace, and has became one of the best selling systems in Japan, at least now Sony is understanding that people buy PSP’s mainly for gaming. The entertainment experience is just an add on, its the games that sell not the other factors.

Does it surprise anyone that a 2 year old portable is selling in greater volumes than a shiny new console? PSPs are sitting around by the truckloads while Nintendo is having trouble keeping up with the Wii demand. The 360 sold more consoles during x-mas than PS3 and Wii combined.
While this may be some good news for the PSP, it's hardly enough to carry it beyond the DS, as it currently has sold 3x as many units.
