Microsoft to offer HD-DVD drive as Xbox 360 accessory
Posted by breaker3000 on 26/01/2006

Consumer Electronics Show - Mircosoft plans on bringing an external HD-DVD drive as an accessory for their next gen system, the Xbox 360. There was no details on price and release date from the announcement. The 360 may have beat the PS3 of going to the market first, but it is still not clear who the winner will be when it comes to HD-DVD vs Blue-Ray. The Blue-Ray discs hold a capacity of 50 GB, while HD-DVD holds 30 GB and Blu-Ray's interactive features are based on Sun Microsystem's Java, while HD-DVD uses iHD, developed by Microsoft and Toshiba. It is unknown how much the external HD DVD drive will cost end-users, but it is likely that the device will not be too expensive. It is possible that a combination of the Xbox 360 and external HD DVD drive will be priced at the same point as the PlayStation 3. Xbox 360 is on track to be the fastest-selling video game console ever, forecast to ship between 4.5 million and 5.5 million units worldwide by the end of June 2006, according to a statement by Microsoft.
